Concert President and CEO Roger Tung Interviewed by SBS News

September 15, 2006

BOSTON — Concert Pharmaceuticals, Inc.,™ President and CEO Roger Tung was interviewed by Marilynn Larkin for the Conference Issue 2006 of SBS News, the Newsletter of the Society for Biomolecular Sciences. In the piece, titled "Roger Tung: Reducing Development Risks Using Creative Approaches to Current Compounds," Tung shared his thoughts about the new approaches to drug discovery and development that smaller companies like Concert are pursuing.

"The focus of particularly startup pharmaceutical companies has shifted dramatically over the past five years or so," Tung tells SBS News. "As a trend, they have moved from research on new biological pathways and platform technologies towards using compounds that are currently on the market or for which there is at least some clinical data, and leveraging those to go forward, to become new development candidates for which the research risk has been removed. There's a risk of going overboard in that direction, but also opportunities to make real advances, maybe more than might appear on the surface."

The interview was given in advance of Roger Tung's keynote speech, "Risk-Balancing a Molecular Portfolio," which he will deliver on September 18, 2006, at the SBS 12th Annual Conference & Exhibition in Seattle, Wash. To read the interview in full, visit sbsonline.org.
